IFSS 2011 FINLAND

Multiple and sustainable use of forests

        <

IFSS is the biggest annual event of IFSA (International Forestry Students' Association). Up to 150 forestry students will get together every year in different country. IFSS is for networking, learning about forestry, forests and nature, and having workshops, multicultural discussions and other activities. IFSS contains the General Assembly of IFSA, where new board, new regional representatives, new Liaison officers, new commissions and head of commissions for IFSA will be elected. During the Symposium participants from all over the world will get familiar with Finnish nature, forest management, living and culture.

Finally it is year 2011 and I am honoured to invite you to come to Finland to the 39th IFSS, which will take place on 3rd-18th August. This is the second time, that Finnish forestry students have an opportunity to organize this amazing IFSA event here in Finland and we are excited to organize as memorable symposium as possible.

Already 16 years has passed since the IFSS was last time organized in Finland, so it means that there have happened many changes in the Finnish forest sector after that. We are honoured to get this great opportunity to present our forestry, forests and country to you. Furthermore, it is a pleasure for us to meet all of you.

Our forests cover approximately 70 % of our land area. Every year the forests grow more than we cut them. To some extent we could say that our forestry is sustainable. Moreover, we use our forests variedly. That is why the theme is chosen to be "Multiple and sustainable use of forests". Finnish organizations are known abroad. For example three Finnish forest industry companies belong to the top 10 forest industry companies in Europe. In my opinion it tells a lot about the knowledge and forestry culture that we have here in Finland.

This year we have a great opportunity to present this knowledge and our beautiful country to our colleagues. I hope that I can see as many of you as possible and I am happy to invite you to join us this year to IFSS here in Finland!
