1) Presentation

Spirit of the session on forestry education :

Knowledgeable and competent graduates are crucial for professional success in forestry and related fields as well as for successful research. Therefore quality of learning and teaching is of out most importance. IFSA started its activity on forestry education during the World Forestry Congress in Argentina in 2009 by proposing a Global Action Plan for Forestry Education. An enquiry also resulted in detailed information on views of forestry students as well as teaching staff on status and means of improvement of forest sciences education.

Now the aim is to discuss on innovative tools and teaching methods for forestry education. This session is definitively oriented towards research and science. Time is not for reviewing education problems anymore. As they have been assessed, there is a need for innovative propositions and implementation of actions to overcome these problems.

The key debates to be raised in the papers and panel discussion are:

  • How sustainable development and education are linked?
  • Is forestry education willing to follow the development of new technologies? How can it be achieved? Is it desirable?
  • Is the scope of education global or local? What are the limits of forestry education (geographical limits: how forestry is linked to cultural, local constraints; but also limits of subject: what is the difference between forestry education and environmental, landscape or even agricultural education?).
  • What are the most innovative perspectives of research about education in forest sciences?
  • The proposed schedule starts with individual papers followed by a moderated panel discussion. Both students and scientists are invited to submit articles, in order to make the discussion as exciting as possible.

Below is a list of accepted oral and poster presentations for this session (final list may vary due to availability of speakers) :

The delegation is currently organizing fundraising, preparing a booth stand, oral and poster presentations, designing a logo, contacting Korean organizers and printing promotion material.

Please find below a sketch of the booth stand (that will be available during the whole week at the Congress) :

Here is a draft of t-shirts that will be worn by students delegates during the Congress:

    6) Sponsors

The delegates are contacting several potential sponsors. Several students whose posters or oral presentation have been accepted need a strong help from various sponsors to attend the congress in good conditions (travel, registration fee and accomodation, for example).

    #1:
At the moment, our main partner for this World Congress is IUFRO. The International Union waived the registration fee for 19 students delegates who accepted to make language volunteering work during the congress. IUFRO also granted a booth stand for IFSA during the whole congress, where the students will present their association, welcome participants and discuss with scientists.
This is a strong and useful help for the delegation.

    #2:
ITTO (The International Tropical Timber Organization) is supporting IFSA during the World Congress, giving a substantial amount dedicated to the charity evening, particularly on printings and promotional documents. IFSA is glad to have such an agreement with ITTO.

    #3:
The European Union is a long-term partner of IFSA. The EU grant is supporting a significant part of T-shirt printings, posters printings, postage costs and travel costs (inside the European Union).
